100 Years of Christianity: Prospect & Challenges

          The emergence of the pioneering missionary with the “Light of the Gospel” was an event of great significance in the history of the Hmars.  Erstwhile, some 1900 years back, St. Paul and his missionary friends turned the present Europe world upside down with the same message of the Gospel. Likewise, our world turned upside down and we were no more the same.

         While many of us were drawing “back to Senvawn”, my wandering thoughts were taken back to a different world somewhere westward, a place called Wales. It was the revival in Wales during the early 20th century, which saw thousands of youth volunteers stepping out as a missionary to spread the Gospel to the unreached. The Great Revival was succeeded by World Missionary Conference or the Edinburgh Missionary Conference at 1910. The spirit of the Conference was driven by the watchword: “The Evangelization of the World in This Generation”. It was led by the spirit of Co-Operation and Promotion of Unity. In short, youth revival carried over by the spirit of evangelisation and commitment to co-operation and unity was the historical context out of which the pioneer missionary took their step towards our world some 100 years down the line.

          Within the period of 100 years our churches has made immense progress and growth in terms of numbers and geographical area but not without problems and struggles. Our church history ravels the rise of great leaders in the field of administration, preaching, teaching, thinkers and so on. We have also seen the downfall of our church and mission, which the present generation but only could wish, would not have happened. Unfortunately, there are yet good numbers of ardent youngsters who are carried away by that seed of error which has led to one of the dark age of Hmar Church and Christianity.

         However, with a handsome hundred years of Christianity, various observers have identified new movements within our churches and fellowships across the country. They are dynamic in nature, relevant in its content, intellectually competitive, and most importantly, presentable to the changing context. The Gospel which we preach and practice has to be commendable to God and people around. This will require us to transcend denominational barriers and build a common platform to discuss and debate on various prospects and challenges to our Gospel and Faith practice.

      Today every individual is affected by globalisation. It has widened our windows of exposure and reach. We are witnessing a world which involves technological, economic, political, and cultural exchanges made possible largely by advances in communication, trans portation, and infrastructure.Unlike many of the tribal community who still does not have Bible in their own dialect, we have got access to it quit earlier. So much so, that, we have different versions of them. Needless to argue which one is the most genuine, or must be use; they all lay a foundation from where we begin a move towards evangelising our self and translating it to our neighbours. There are still spaces where our learned theological scholars can add on in matters of literary and textual criticism. Meanwhile, hermeneutical expertise also needs to be sharpen to make the raw facts live in the face of religio-pluralistic reality.

          Innovations in technology have taken us further ahead. It has come with both positive and negative impacts of which we are well aware. There is also scope for Hmar Techno-evangelism as we have access to Bible through computers and mobiles. Fact of the matter is that we need not reach out in flesh but our gadgets and accessories can help reach our messages beyond boundaries. Social networking sites like facebook, Orkut, Mumbaihmar.com, Inpui.com etc are some platform from where we can exchange these messages and come up with thought provoking discussion. The idea may sound weird but there are instances in the Bible where a donkey played a role or two to carry out God’s mission!

          There is increase in the number of field missionaries sent every year by our respective churches. Collectively we may be among the highest missionary sending church in the country. There is clarity of vision and mission amidst some criticism. Our mission strategy need to be bailed out of its market­-base approach, spirit of ill-competition and capitalistic ideology of greater crown for greater achiever. Our strategy must be more participatory and co-operative. Distributive innovations for exchange of resources like man-power and technology with the support of selfless mission minded members and leaders will definitely take us to a new era of mission and evangelism which the soul of our forefathers has longed for.

          We have received the Gospel the way it was presented to us in western clothing. We talk about God in western theological terms and definitions. Like it or not most of our theological debates resulting in division has its roots there. A line has to be drawn between our indigenous theology and western theology. Our understanding of Christian doctrines and dogmas necessarily need not be a reflection of theirs. How far can we go on relying on them when they have their own unresolved issues? We have to start building our own framework for theology. Consider the songs of our pioneer Christians; they have their own aura which indeed gets divorced from the west in many aspects. We have to revisit the spirit of our indigenous visionaries. I strongly believe that our ‘talk about God’ must be through our own lenses and perception.

       There is also emerging need to place the role of experts and resource persons from various fields who can address issues on which the churches are still quite through intellectual writings. Our church-magazines are burdened with outdated sermons which are so evangelical that they don’t find relevance on earth. Sadly, we have not addressed more relevant Christian response to our reality. Issues related to unemployment, addiction, environment, women oppression, person with disability, economics etc. which are so much part of our daily life seems to be ignored. Our approach and scope of enquiry must be revived lest our publications will never reach the hands of growing intellectuals. On the other hand, educated intellectual from various fields must make effort to find some spaces for incepting their intellectual write-ups in these magazines and periodicals.
       Issues related to denominational proliferation need to be raised with the Easter resurrection lest the root of division will be grounded deeper in the earth of misleading denominationalism. The young generation needs to transcend denominational barriers and unite the broken body of Christ at least to a level of co-operation and mutual understanding. There has been significant debate going on the possibility and rationale for re-unification. With the present power relation and administrative structure rationalistic critics have not seen any possibility of reunion until the second coming of Christ.

          However, ardent idealist movement has started to emerge from the other end of diasporic world. Hmar Fellowships in Delhi, Guwahati and Mumbai to name few, has ceased to create any denominational labelling to their newly formed community of believers. This movement has to a significant extent helped gathering the members into a common umbrella of one fellowship. This pattern seems to be impractical in our traditional set up. The very reason is the cost of deconstruction of the old structure visible and invisible, within and outside the church which are rooted there from decades. No wonder, if things are not stitched in time, we may end up celebrating 100 years of division of so and so church!

       Women’s’ role and participation is another important premise of discussion which demands extra attention. The church has to be redeemed from its patriarchal construct. There is a lesson to learn from the recently passed Women Reservation Bill. Why is the church still ambiguous and shut to discuss openly about the role and participation of women in decision-making and ministry? We talk and propagate on women empowerment, participation and emancipation. Has our single publication or assembly discussions brought the issue of women ordination? If the church has to be compatible with the world and re-form its strength women’s role and participation has to be re-considered without traditional prejudices. The politics of patriarchy which has long existed within our Church is contradictory to the whole understanding of creation narrative.

         Our Christianity has reached a good handsome age; yet the church is still in slumber. We talk about heaven and hell forgetting that both come under the premises of realised eschatology. The church has the potential to create a paradise within it at the same time; it can create mayhem out of it as well. We are in the threshold of new thinking from where we see new paradigms and shifts which are more dynamic, relevant and presentable to the world outside and around. God presented God-self in every sphere of history and place in the way the world could perceive God. God’s intervention did not happen in vacuum. Prospects are laid in our table they need to be visualised, explored and finally implemented. Challenges are real and need to be addressed. Church will be questioned on issues and it has to answer its stand. It will be interesting to see the church’s response to certain issues which were laid above and many more which are still to come. Our engagement and intervention into these prospects and challenges will define whether we really worth hoisting the banner of “100 Years of Christianity”.

Into the Father’s House

On the one hand there is the persistent memory of the past with its failures, hurts, shame, and guilt. On the other hand there is the revelation of the gospel that shows me who I now am in Christ.

In so many of our lives, the voice of condemnation drowns out the voice of revelation. It is so much easier to focus our eyes on us than on the Lamb. We become overwhelmed with the memory of our past rather than fixing our gaze on the robe, the ring, the sandals, the fatted calf-all symbols of our Father’s grace lavished upon us. We walk down that dark road to find a corner in the servants’ quarters.

Your journey to the Father’s house begins with that first step of changing your mind about who you perceive yourself to be and who you truly are. When you do change your mind about who you are, you will change you mind about where you live, moving out of the cold and isolated quarters of the servant into the warmth and intimacy of the Father’s house.
